Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. This class will offer an introduction to geocaching including coordinate systems, GPS systems, history of geocaching, types of caches, and geocaching etiquette. Participants will have the opportunity to search for nearby caches.

GPS technology can be an amazing tool for education. There are so many different applications and ways to implement this into your classroom instruction, no matter what you teach. Ideas for using geocaching in many curricular areas and grade levels will be shared. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing to look for local geocaches.

This workshop is intended for superintendents, principals, and other administrators who will need to understand and communicate to teachers, parents and the public about the new school report cards that will be publicly released in August.  Attendees will be guided through the index and red flag areas using their own data to better understand their index number and school accountability rating they have been assigned.

Prevent someone from stealing your personal, school, or class identity. Find out what kids are doing when they spend hours on

WHAT TO EXPECT:  This half day workshop will provide guidance for implementing Wisconsin’s revised SLD rule through the administrator’s perspective of leadership for school improvement. Using PowerPoint presentation, discussion, handouts, and case study activities, participants will be able to:
*Understand the essential components of the SLD rule.
*Guide staff in finding and evaluating research-based interventions and progress monitoring tools for applicability and efficacy.
*Distinguish the difference between Response to Intervention (RtI) and what the SLD rule requires of schools.
*Implement the school wide notification requirement.
*Recognize administration’s role in monitoring fidelity.
*Understand the importance of collaboration in implementing the SLD rule and guide school staff in assuming their individual roles in the process.

TARGETED AUDIENCE:  Special education directors and coordinators, pupil services administrators, principals and similar administrative staff.  This training is not designed for school implementation teams. Full day trainings will be offered beginning in the Fall of 2012 for school-based teams comprised of classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, school psychologists and other related school staff.

Apple’s iPod/iPad touch technology delivers a variety of innovative features that make it easier to use for those who are visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing or are users with impaired physical or motor skills. These universal access features along with the iPad’s basic technologies that allow the user the ability to record audio, video and run a wide range of applications can really help support students with special needs in the educational setting.

This hands-on workshop will give you the opportunity to work hands-on with iPads. We will explore the iPads basic functions that support all learners, universal access settings and apps that are relevant to helping special needs learners succeed in the classroom. You will also learn about key resources and websites for finding apps, podcasts, books and music and some basics in managing your iPads. Join us for a fun day!

We know that Common Formative Assessments written, administered, and used by teams of teachers can have a significant impact on student achievement. They are often described as the “tipping point” in the work of Professional Learning Communities when collaborative teams begin to really understand how to make a difference for their students. Participants in this two-day workshop will learn key ideas about how to design and use quality assessments in a way that is both practical and effective.

This workshop is designed to provide both an understanding about why assessments are so important as well as to provide specific tools and protocols that teams can use when writing and using assessments. Participants are encouraged to attend as a team, bring a copy of your standards, and any other resources that will help you in the design process. A team laptop will be helpful to download the tools and templates as well as save your work.

During these two days, you’ll learn how to identify which standards are essential for your course or grade level so that your formative assessments become more focused and provide more specific ideas for team response. We’ll explore how to plan each assessment so that you’ll be confident the information you get back is both valid and reliable. As part of assessment design, we’ll also look at how to write questions that provide good information to know what to do next for students.

This workshop will also focus on building an assessment culture that includes student participation and that addresses grading practices that make sense. We’ll explore how to link the data from formative assessments to the PRtI framework ensuring that students are getting the time and support they need to be successful.

Biographical Information

Chris Jakicic, EdD, served as principal of Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove, Illinois, from its opening day in 1999 through the spring of 2007. Under her leadership, the staff shifted toward a collaborative culture implementing PLC practices. During that time student achievement increased each year and Woodlawn Middle School was one of the first schools to be included in the “Evidence of Effectiveness” list on the allthingsplc.info website. Dr. Jakicic began her career teaching middle school science before serving as principal of Willow Grove Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, for nine years.

Through her work with teachers and administrators across the country, Dr. Jakicic emphasizes that effective teaming is the heart of PLCs. She also shares practical knowledge about how to use common formative assessments to improve student achievement.

She is the co-author of Common Formative Assessment: A Toolkit for Professional Learning Communities at WorkTM. She is the author of book chapters in the PLC anthologies: The Collaborative Teacher, Teacher as Assessment Leader, and Principal as Assessment Leader, as well articles for a variety of professional journals.

Leadership Academy

We know that Common Formative Assessments written, administered, and used by teams of teachers can have a significant impact on student achievement. They are often described as the “tipping point” in the work of Professional Learning Communities when collaborative teams begin to really understand how to make a difference for their students. Participants in this two-day workshop will learn key ideas about how to design and use quality assessments in a way that is both practical and effective.

This workshop is designed to provide both an understanding about why assessments are so important as well as to provide specific tools and protocols that teams can use when writing and using assessments. Participants are encouraged to attend as a team, bring a copy of your standards, and any other resources that will help you in the design process. A team laptop will be helpful to download the tools and templates as well as save your work.

During these two days, you’ll learn how to identify which standards are essential for your course or grade level so that your formative assessments become more focused and provide more specific ideas for team response. We’ll explore how to plan each assessment so that you’ll be confident the information you get back is both valid and reliable. As part of assessment design, we’ll also look at how to write questions that provide good information to know what to do next for students.

This workshop will also focus on building an assessment culture that includes student participation and that addresses grading practices that make sense. We’ll explore how to link the data from formative assessments to the PRtI framework ensuring that students are getting the time and support they need to be successful.

Biographical Information

Chris Jakicic, EdD, served as principal of Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove, Illinois, from its opening day in 1999 through the spring of 2007. Under her leadership, the staff shifted toward a collaborative culture implementing PLC practices. During that time student achievement increased each year and Woodlawn Middle School was one of the first schools to be included in the “Evidence of Effectiveness” list on the allthingsplc.info website. Dr. Jakicic began her career teaching middle school science before serving as principal of Willow Grove Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, for nine years.

Through her work with teachers and administrators across the country, Dr. Jakicic emphasizes that effective teaming is the heart of PLCs. She also shares practical knowledge about how to use common formative assessments to improve student achievement.

She is the co-author of Common Formative Assessment: A Toolkit for Professional Learning Communities at WorkTM. She is the author of book chapters in the PLC anthologies: The Collaborative Teacher, Teacher as Assessment Leader, and Principal as Assessment Leader, as well articles for a variety of professional journals.
